warrantless listening

What's happening today:

The Senate Judiciary Committee opens hearings on President Bush's use of the National Security Agency to monitor domestic communications. Monday's lone witness is Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

I do not appreciate the President and his friends running roughshod over Congress. If they felt the law needed changing, they should have tried to change the law. There are good reasons we have a system of checks and balances. This administration frequently seems to ignore them. Why not just decided someone needs to be executed in the name of protecting the country from terrorism? Why not just lock up anyone whose looks you don't like? That is not how we operate in America. This is a democracy, not some totalitarian regime.
